MECCHA CHAMELEON Controls: PC, Controller & Steam Deck
MECCHA CHAMELEON plays on keyboard + mouse, any Steam-Input controller, or the Steam Deck. Below is the default PC layout, how each input method feels for the paint-matching mechanic, how to rebind, and how to get a PS5, Xbox, or Switch controller working on your Windows PC.
Default keyboard & mouse layout
Like most third-person PC action games, MECCHA CHAMELEON uses WASD + mouse. The default layout follows the genre convention — open Settings → Controls in-game to confirm exact bindings and remap.
| Action | Default |
|---|---|
| Move | W A S D |
| Camera / aim | Mouse |
| Paint (primary action) | Left mouse button |
| Interact / context action | E |
| Jump | Space |
| Sprint | Shift |
| Crouch / pose toggle | C or Ctrl |
| Open palette (paint colors) | Tab or Q |
| Scoreboard / players | Tab |
| Pause / menu | Esc |
| Voice chat (push-to-talk) | V |
Treat the table above as the conventional PC layout. The exact defaults can shift between patches — always confirm in Settings → Controls inside the game itself before re-binding.
How to rebind keys
- From the main menu or the in-game pause screen, open Settings.
- Go to the Controls (or Key Bindings) tab.
- Click the action you want to remap, then press the new key.
- Save and close. Most actions are remappable; a few core ones (like the settings menu itself) may be locked to prevent you from locking yourself out.
Reset to defaults at any time with the Reset to Default button at the bottom of the same screen.
Playing with a PS5, Xbox, or Switch controller
MECCHA CHAMELEON supports any controller Steam Input recognizes — which on Windows means the DualSense (PS5), Xbox Series controllers, and Switch Pro Controller all work. Steam Input handles the mapping automatically.
How to connect
- Wired: USB cable. Plug and play on Windows.
- Bluetooth: Pair the controller under Windows → Bluetooth settings. Hold the Share + PS button on DualSense, or the Sync button on the back of Xbox/Switch pads, to enter pairing mode.
- Xbox Wireless dongle: Lowest latency for Xbox pads.
Default gamepad layout
| Action | Face buttons |
|---|---|
| Move | Left stick |
| Camera / aim | Right stick |
| Paint (primary) | Right trigger (RT / R2 / ZR) |
| Interact | Face button (Y / △ / X) |
| Jump | Face button (A / ✕ / B) |
| Open palette | Left bumper (LB / L1 / L) |
| Scoreboard | Left trigger (LT / L2 / ZL) |
| Pause | Menu / Start button |
Button labels differ by pad: Xbox uses ABXY, PlayStation uses ✕○△□, Switch uses ABXY in a different layout. Steam Input abstracts this so the in-game prompts may show Xbox labels even on a DualSense — that's normal.
Keyboard/mouse vs controller for MECCHA CHAMELEON
| Input | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard + mouse | Competitive play, precise paint-matching | Less ergonomic on a couch |
| Controller (DualSense / Xbox / Pro) | Casual sessions, couch play, big-screen | Paint aiming is less precise |
| Steam Deck | Handheld play on the go | Unofficial support — see Steam Deck guide |
The paint-matching mechanic is where the choice matters most: a mouse gives you fine, deliberate brush control that's harder to match with a thumbstick. For seeker-vs-hider mind games it matters less — both inputs work fine.
Steam Deck controls (brief)
On the Deck, MECCHA CHAMELEON uses the standard gamepad layout via Steam Input. The Deck's trackpads also work as a mouse fallback if you'd rather aim that way. A launch-week issue saw the keyboard defaulting to QWERTY for some players — that's a Steam Input / Deck configuration thing rather than a game bug, and it's covered in the Steam Deck guide.
Gyro aim (optional)
Steam Input exposes gyro on the DualSense and Switch Pro Controller. Enable it under Steam → Settings → Controller → Gyro if you want motion-assisted aim. The game doesn't require gyro and most players stick to sticks or mouse — this is a "nice to have" rather than a competitive edge.
FAQ
What are the default controls for MECCHA CHAMELEON on PC?
On Windows PC, MECCHA CHAMELEON uses the standard PC-action-game layout: WASD for movement, mouse for camera, left click for the primary action (painting / interacting), spacebar for jump, and Shift for sprint. Open the in-game Settings → Controls menu for the full list and to rebind anything.
Can you play MECCHA CHAMELEON with a controller?
Yes — any controller Steam Input recognizes works, including DualSense (PS5 pad), Xbox Series controllers, and the Switch Pro Controller. Connect over Bluetooth or USB before launching the game, and Steam Input handles the mapping automatically. Controller is fine for casual play, but mouse aim tends to be more precise for the paint-matching mechanic.
Is keyboard/mouse or controller better for MECCHA CHAMELEON?
Keyboard + mouse for competitive play, especially if you take paint-matching seriously — the mouse gives finer control over where paint lands. Controller is great for relaxed couch-style sessions or for players who find KBM awkward in third-person games.
How do I rebind keys in MECCHA CHAMELEON?
From the main menu or in-game pause screen, open Settings → Controls (or Key Bindings). Select the action you want to change, press the new key, and save. Most actions are remappable; a few core ones (like opening the settings menu itself) may be locked.
What controls does the Steam Deck use?
On the Deck, MECCHA CHAMELEON maps to the default gamepad layout through Steam Input: left stick moves, right stick aims camera, face buttons handle interact and jump, triggers handle primary/secondary actions. The Deck's trackpads work as a fallback for mouse-style aiming. Some launch-week players hit a QWERTY-keyboard default issue — see the Steam Deck guide for the fix.
Does MECCHA CHAMELEON support gyro aim?
Steam Input exposes gyro on the DualSense and Switch Pro controllers, so if you enable it in Steam's controller settings you can use motion for fine camera adjustment. The game itself doesn't require gyro and most players stick to sticks or mouse.
